Excellent news yesterday to hear the government announce more than £5m of new funding for Salisbury and Amesbury following recent tragic events. This package will be used to support the police, businesses, meet additional costs of dealing with the incident, and help boost tourism. The government has already provided a £2.5m package following the 4 March incident, and this new funding will be on top of what has already been distributed.
The new package includes just under £1m for response and recovery costs, a further £927,000 for business support, £870,000 for boosting tourism, and almost £600,000 to cover free parking and park-and-ride services, which until now had been funded by Wiltshire Council. I realise that recent events have come as a tremendous shock to local people and some businesses will feel vulnerable. I have therefore pushed my government colleagues to ensure that the financial support is available to help us to weather the current storm. I can assure people across South Wiltshire that I am closely monitoring the current situation and if further resources and aid are required, I will not hesitate to do everything within my power to secure it.
