During this week, there are various events and opportunities to celebrate UK Parliament Week, working with organisations such as Scouts, Girlguiding and the British Youth Council. #UKPW18 encourages everyone to explore what a thriving democracy means, learn more about how the UK Parliament functions and discover how history has shaped our democracy. This is particularly the case in this #Vote100 year, which marks a centenary of women gaining the right to vote. In the 2017 General Election, a record high of 32% of MPs elected to the House of Commons were women. There is further to go in encouraging diversity; UK Parliament invites people of all backgrounds to have a say in their democracy. Other centenaries coming up this year include the Parliament (Qualification of Women) Act which gave women over 21 the right to stand for election as an MP (21 November) and the 1918 General Election when women over 30 and all men over 21 voted for the first time (14 December).
